Weekly Update : 7 May

Standard

Dear Parents and Carers,

Following on from meetings held during yesterday’s inset day, there are quite a few items to bring to your attention this week;

In School Transition

We feel that is very important to create opportunities for a thorough transition this year in preparation for next session, especially seeing as many pupils have been in their current classrooms and with their current teachers over the past two sessions.  With this in mind, we intend to run 3 transition mornings on 4th, 11th and 18th June.  On these dates  pupils will spend the mornings in their proposed classes for the start of next session.  We currently await final decisions around staffing and allocations for next session but there is a possibility that we will require to move to composite classes and information around this will be shared as soon as it is confirmed.

We are also hopeful that it will be possible to nursery pupils to have an in person transition this year and also that P7’s will have a chance for a transition visit to Portree High School. Further details will be issued as these are confirmed.

Homework

In normal circumstances, we aim to reduce homework for all pupils during this summer term.  While we will reduce homework this term, certain tasks will continue to be assigned due to the large amount of time lost due to lockdown.  As a whole school, reading will continue for all classes and in addition, class teachers will determine other areas of focus for homework that they feel is most beneficial for the learners in their classes.  This will differ across classes and will continue to be assigned through Google Classrooms.

RSHE

Pupils in Primary 5-7 will take part in Relationships and Sexual Health lessons as part of their Health and Wellbeing Curriculum this term.  Further information around this will be shared with parents next week.

Additional Summer Dates

You will find below, an updated list of upcoming dates for this term.

Tuesday 18th May – Outward Bound session for P7 – Given that all P7’s have missed out on transition activities this year, the council are providing a half day of activities for all pupils.  These sessions will combine pupils from other Skye schools.  Our session will take place on Tuesday 18th May, combined with Knockbreck Primary School.  Further information will be sent out to P7 parents next week.

Tuesday 19th May – The Parent Council will hold their termly meeting via Microsoft Teams.  A link will be shared with parents closer to the time and all parents are welcome to attend.

Monday 7th June – the council have confirmed an additional inset day for the 7th June and schools will be closed to pupils.

Wednesday 9th June – Race for Life – we have registered to hold a whole school Race for Life event in support of Cancer Research.  We will set up a Just Giving page where pupils can be sponsored for their participation.  This is an optional event and pupils can choose to walk or run the course which will be set up around the King George pitch.  The theme for the day will be Heroes and pupils are encouraged to dress up accordingly.

Monday 14th June  – this date marks 30 years since Portree Primary School was opened.  We plan to hold an afternoon birthday party in the playground with ice cream, cake, dancing and bunting.  Further details will follow and pupils will be asked to come to school in their party clothes to help us celebrate the occasion.

Thursday 17th June – School Picnic – Each year the canteen have a summer theme picnic day.  While this date is yet to be confirmed, we plan for the pupils to have their picnic themed lunch at school as per usual and then to take them down to the King George for the afternoon.  We would encourage pupils to take in a food donation for the Foodbank on this day, if they wish.

Thursday 24th June – Prize giving – while we will still not be in a position to have parents in school, we plan to hold our Prize giving on Thursday 24th June at 2pm.  While this will be held in person for pupils, parents would be welcome to join us, virtually via a Google Meet link.

Friday 25th June – Last Day of Term – school will finish for the session on Friday 25th June at the earlier time of 12noon.  Stagecoach are not able to provide earlier buses that day.  Pupils who normally travel on a Stagecoach service should make alternate arrangements for collection that day.  This is the same for all three schools in Portree.
