Highlights from this week:
~ A big congratulations goes to our fantastic shinty teams this week. They took part in the shinty tournament last Saturday. Again, our pupils were incredible. The pupils were a credit to the school and their dedicated coaches, showing amazing attitude. The girls deserve a special round of applause; they got all the way to the final but lost to a strong BSGP team. The P5 and under team again did great coming in joint 3rd.
~ Class of the Week last week was Primary 5, and they chose to have a movie afternoon. It sounds like they had a brilliant afternoon. They thoroughly deserved this treat, trying hard to consistently demonstrate the school values.
~ We had several of our pupils taking part in the Colonel Jock Competition last weekend and wanted to extend a huge well done to them. They certainly make us all so proud with their hard work and dedication to their talent.
~ We were kindly gifted a large number of Pheonix Comics and our Primary 4’s have absolutely loved reading them!
~ One of our pupils competed in the InverRoss dance festival last weekend and did so well. This was Evie’s first competition, and she has worked so hard! Here she is sporting her medals.
~ Internet Safety
Computer Club spent time playing ‘Interland’ this week. Interland is a web-based adventure game designed for children between the ages of 6-13 which helps to teach the basics of internet safety. The group enjoyed playing the level ‘Kind Kingdom’ which is all about treating others with respect and dealing with cyber-bullies. The game can be found at this link: https://beinternetawesome.withgoogle.com/en_uk/interland/
~ Fire Station Visit:
As part of learning about their community, Primary 6 wrote a formal letter requesting to visit the Portree Fire Station. Their request was kindly accepted by the crew commander!
During the visit, they learnt about how to stay safe in the event of a fire, and the vital role firefighters play in saving lives. They operated the thermal camera, had an extensive tour around the facility and the fire engine, chatted with members of the crew, and had a go at using the hose. What a brilliant learning opportunity! 🚒🧑🚒
~ We had our first House Meetings of the year this week and the House Captains did an incredible job of chairing the meetings. Pupils discussed ways to earn House tokens and what they have been working hard on. They then worked in teams to create a House Mascot, and they came up with some fabulous ideas. We’ll share more soon.

Information about Head Lice
Head Lice are a common problem in school aged children. They can’t be prevented, but regular checking ensures early detection and treatment if necessary. Parents and carers should check their children’s head once a week during hair washing. You need your usual shampoo, conditioner, and a detection comb – ask your local pharmacist to recommend a suitable one. Remember that you are looking for living moving lice, the only evidence that your child is infected. If you find a living louse, ask your local pharmacist, school nurse, health visitor or GP for advice regarding treatment.

Police Scotland
The Police Scotland Cybercrime team are running an online webinar in February around Keeping Children Safe Online. This is for parents and carers to join to learn about the risks of the online world and how to help keep children and young people safe. This is the link with a wee bit more information
Drop-off and Collection of Pupils
A reminder that we have a designated pupil pick-up/drop-off point at the Camanachd Square car park (near Community Centre and Portree Nursery), and a crossing patrol on Home Farm Road to help pupils cross safely. It would be very helpful if families could use this area as much as possible to reduce traffic around the school. Please also respect our neighbours around the school by not blocking driveways and be aware that Marsco Place and Glamaig Place are unadopted roads, meaning it is the residents of these streets that are responsible for them rather than Highland Council. We are hopeful that the yellow zig zag lines will be reinstated outside of our school entrance in the next few weeks.
Thank you for your support with this.
Important – Pupils taking bus
Pupils who take the bus to school, but who are not eligible for free school transport must be in possession of their Young Scot/National Entitlement card.
If you are unsure about whether your child is entitled to free school transport, you can check eligibility at this link: https://www.highland.gov.uk/info/878/schools/12/school_transport or be in touch with the school and we’ll let you know.
If your child does not have a Young Scot/National Entitlement card you can apply for one at this link: https://young.scot/get-informed/young-persons-free-bus-travel/
